Firstly it was forced upon them since Japan surrendered to the USA after the twin atom bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The USA then occupied the Japanese mainland until 1952 and some parts (like Okinawa) until 1972.

Secondly because if they had not surrendered to the USA the Soviet Union was in the process of annihilating their forces on the mainland (i.e. Korea) and would have set up a communist Japan if given time.

Thirdly through the lenient restoration by American forces and the introduction of the particular brand of venture capitalism that the US brought. The Japanese thrived and during the late 1970's and early 1980's became the second largest economy in the world (now third after China). Mutual prosperity is the key here.
