The colonists wanted to ed taxation without representation. They really did not initially want to break away from England. The feeling was that they were being forced to by a non responsive Government that was taxing the people of the new colonies without regard to what they were getting for their money. The feeling was that they were being charged for luxuries that only the old country received. The fear was that they had no one that was looking after the colonies needs or wishes.
Setting up a Government that was going to be able to solve these central issues was their primary goal. One of those issues was a King that if good things went fine, but if they had a bad King things were bad. The needs of every citizen were going to be heard. A true democracy would require people voting for every little issue, a physical impossibility, so they decided to have representatives from each area care for the needs of that area.
The founding fathers did not have anything against reigion, but wanted it to be the decision of the individual, not a decision of the King. They were not against taxation. They did not want to waste 10% of their income with no return. (We fought the war for far less then 10% taxation) The thought was that if we had representatives that did not receive money from outside their districts they would care for the needs of their area.
