The Townshend Acts were a series of acts passed, beginning in 1767, by Great Britain. The history is rather involved and would benefit from studying the internet. Basically, due to protests from the colonists, many parts of the Act were eventually repealed, except the tax on tea! This led to the 'Boston Tea Party' when colonists dressed as Indians, boarded ships and threw the cargoes of tea overboard. Everything was leading up to the American Revolution, and the colonists wish for independence from Great Britain.
