Many countries are socialist, and believers in this system of government are widespread. Libertarianism is not a popular political theory, however, there are still people who believe it is a viable way of government. A US senator, Senator Paul Rand is a libertarian. His views are not widely accepted.

The Republican and Democratic party are the only two major parties. There are several minor parties such as the Constitution Party of 2012 which could tip the election in VA. There is a Green Party and a Libertarian Party. Probably still a Socialist Party, Most of these do not get on the ballots except in a few selected states that are concerned with the issues they concentrate on.

The US did not originally have a two party system. There were several parties in the beginning, and even George Washington warned against the two party system. Over the years however, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party have become the dominant parties in the US. There are still other parties, such as the Independant, Green, Socialist, and even Communist parties. Usually these parties don't get enough votes or attention to become popular though.
