Why doesn't the US government get rid of the offensive term African American and use the term black?
The term African American is not an official term. It is an attempt at placating the guilty, self hating white liberals. The term means absolutely nothing in definition. It can't. Africa is a continent and not a country. Africa has countries differing in many types of skin color and ethnic and religious diversity. For instance, Libya is a country made up of people with Olive to tan skin color. Could someone from Libya be defined as an "African American"? South Africa is a country that "white people" live as well as non-white. Are they "African"? The earliest use and possible origin that I have found was in the poem by Johnny Duncan called "I can". It has evolved and adopted to replace ugly words like 'black". I suppose "white" is not that ugly and can still be used to describe color or race. I am not advocating or condone slavery or poor treatment of blacks in the history of this nation but I am also not willing to play along with a politically correct term only to make some feel better. We are adults, get over yourself.
