It existed in Africa and Asia. During the time of Columbus, Arab slave traders were already deeply involved in the slave trade. Even in the high level Native American empires, such as the Incas and the Aztecs, these empires made slaves of other Native Tribes they had conquered.And as an aside, in 19th century England, slavery was not abolished until 1828.
