Before the 1870's the major cause for British Imperialism in Africa was to bring Christianity and European-brand society to African countries. They also practiced imperialism for trade purpose, but very little in Africa. The British economy has always depended deeply on trade, and Britain did want the West Coast of Africa for its palm oil. They took control of it simply because the native political structure was too unstable for good commerce without British management. The British also wanted to bring the English orderly government to Africans and spread christianity.

Disputes between Spain and Portugal led to the Treaty of Tordesillas, which drew a line down the map. Spain took what was to the West (most of the Americas) and Portugal took the East (Africa, India and a sliver of South America AKA Brazil) Also, European expansion was in vogue and they didn't want to be the only power not in the New World.
