Because the Russian Front had finally taken it's toll on Germany. When Germany invaded Russia in 1941, that became the real war in Europe. Germany deployed 75% of it's army against the Soviet Union. The remaining 25% was sent against Britain and the US. That 25% was finally eroded by 1943, especially with the landings in Italy and the new P51 Mustangs which had full escort ranges up to 1,600 miles, which was considered remarkable...(and yet the Japanese A6M Zero fighter plane had been flying that distance since 1942 at Guadalcanal!).

Had not Germany attacked Russia in 1941, there would've been no turning point in the ETO in 1943.
