North Africa was conquered by the Romans and was part of the Roman Empire. It had two provinces: Africa (western Libya, Tunisia, coastal Algeria and northern Morocco) and Aegyptus (Egypt and Cyrenaica, coastal eastern Libya) . Rome imported huge amounts of grain to feed its massive population. Egypt supplied half of the grain and Tunisia was the second most important supplier (the other important suppliers were Sicily and Sardinia). Egypt also exported cotton, linen papyrus, ivory, gemstones, ebony, ostrich feathers, leopard skins, lions, leopards and elephants.
