In the early days of Massachusetts, if you wanted to get from Boston to the western part of the state, the Boston Post Road was your only option, and it was widely used by horses & carriages, and stagecoaches. This road got its name from another important function it provided-- mail delivery. (In the late 1700s, Americans were still using the British term "the post," where today we call it "the mail.") Riders who worked for the postal service used the Boston Post Road to deliver letters and packages across the state. After a system of paved roads and highways was developed, the Boston Post Road became US Route 1, around 1925.

Long before the automobile, the mail was delivered by men who rode horses or used a horse-drawn carriage. The old word for the mail (derived from the British term) was the "post"-- which still survives in the term "post office." The Boston Post Road was the road that went from Boston to New York, with stops along the way for delivering the mail. Today, it still survives as a highway, although under different names, and it is still very well-traveled, although no longer just by people delivering letters and packages. I enclose a link to the history of this amazing and historic road.

It had traffic from the beginning with stage coaches and farmers with wagons bringing crops to market. It has the designation of US 1. Thousands of cars and trucks use it every day.
