Two reasons: Communications and morale. Up until the end of the Vietnam War (1975), the US Army used to traditionally march it's men on incredibly long marches (for a draftee), both during boot camp and when arriving to his unit. Guidons (flags) at the lead of an infantry column would be the visual signal to "double time" (run), or halt, or continue to march; since over two hundred men back to the rear would've been impossible to hear commands...the visual flags were used. Long marches are very boring (Very Boring!), the beat of a drum, and especially some bag-pipes really livened up the march. The bugle was used during the horse cavalry days; they cannot be used with tanks, because the tank's engines were to loud (in Vietnam)...so we used radio's and flag (visual) commands. With the old horse cavalry, the bugle was used to give commands...form up, columns of twos, form on line, forward at the trot, rally around the command, and of course, Hollywood's favorite; Charge!
