Davy Crockett made his own legend as "King of the Wild Frontier." He was formerly a Congressman from Tennessee noted for his honesty. When he lost a reelection bid, he was quoted as stating that the people of Tennessee can go to hell while he was going to Texas to volunteer for the defense of the Alamo mission. After his death there, plays and comic strips of his exploits became part of lore though no American man survived the Alamo who could actually tell the real story. Actor Jimmy Stewart is told by a reporter in the movie "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance," "When the legend becomes fact... print the legend". The legend came to life in a ABC television show "Disneyland" which premiered on Oct. 27, 1954, starring Fess Parker as Davy Crockett. The song, which went on to sales of 10 million copies, was written as an afterthought in about 20 minutes by George Bruns, Disney's head songwriter and composer, and Crockett script writer Tom Blackburn, who had never written a song before. In 1955, The "Ballad of Davy Crockett" became the fastest-selling recording up to that time. The young generation were treated to paraphernalia including t-shirts with Davy Crockett's face on it. I know that because I had one of my own. In the television program, Fess Parker's "Davy Crockett" is always seen wearing a coonskin hat. It is stated he was seen wearing a fur hat only once. These hats also became a top seller in 1955 as there were as many as 5,000 sold per day. The funny thing is that coonskins were selling for 25 cents a pound before the Davy Crockett craze, was selling for 8 dollars a pound during the peak of that craze. One more thing, Davy Crockett, while alive, was known as David Crockett. The name "Davy" only came after he was killed.
