I had the privilege of meeting General Haig on three separate occasions while in the service. He was at the time the supreme allied commander of the US. forces but as down to earth as a man you would like to meet on the street. He wasn't arrogant or full of himself even though he held such a high office for his country. I was just an enlisted soldier and yet he showed me respect for the duties that I was performing as if they were as important as his. On the third occasion while serving with the US Army honer guard in Mons Belgium dedicating a monument to the men that fought in the battle of the bulge during WW11 he was happy to hear that my father was one of the few survivors of this battle. It was only the third time that he had ever seen me and yet he called me by my first name and spoke to me as if we were old friends. I have always remarked on this very point the man was genuine and the type of leader a man would be proud to follow. I am in my 50's now and threw the course of my life I have had the privilege of meeting very few people that I respect as much. I wasn't aware that my commander and friend had passed and I feel this country has lost a great leader and a real man.
