After World War 1 Austria was no longer part of Germany. However, Austrians were essentially of Germanic origins. Adolf Hitler was born in Austria. Therefore when he came to rule he chose to annex Austria into Germany's Third Reich.

Austria was absorbed into Germany for 2 reasons - it fit into Hitler's view of a united Germanic people and the majority of Austrians wanted the merger. They were strong supporters of Hitler and his vision for the future.
