AnswerDuring the third century (200-299) Christianity had at last established a firm foothold in the Roman Empire, with up to ten per cent of the population professing to be Christian.

Several emperors, most particularly Philip the Arab, openly supported Christianity. In fact, it was rumoured that Philip had actually become a Christian, so open was his interest and support for the faith. Apart from the brief periods of persecution in 249-251 and 257, Christians could worship and preach openly. Christianity was respected for the high moral values it taught.

The threat of eternal damnation was a new concept that caused consternation among some pagans, who had never had to fear eternal punishment under the old religions. Some felt that it was safer to become Christian, simply to avoid hellfire. If Christianity was wrong, this would not matter, since the pagan gods would not condemn them to hell for their apostasy.
