Lower Egypt contained the Nile Delta region, an area that was annually revitalized by seasonal flooding of the Nile river. The longest river in the world, the Nile flows more than 4,000 miles through northeastern Africa to the Egyptian Nile Delta region and into the Mediterranean Sea. Before modern dams were constructed, the fertile farmland of northern ancient Egypt received the silt from much of the river's million square mile drainage basin.
