In 1485, Columbus presented his plans to John II, King of Portugal. He proposed the king equip three sturdy ships and grant Columbus one year's time to sail out into the Atlantic, search for a western route to the Orient, and return. Columbus also requested he be made "Great Admiral of the Ocean", appointed governor of any and all lands he discovered, and given one-tenth of all revenue from those lands. The king submitted the proposal to his experts, who rejected it. It was their considered opinion that Columbus's estimation of a travel distance of 2,400 miles (3,860 km) was, in fact, far too short.
First of all, the commitee appointed by the King to study Columbus' proposal discovered that Columbus was grossly miscalculating and underestimating the distance to China: the geographic location on the globe of China was well-known to the Portuguese through their earlier travels by the eastward route. So it advised the King not to go along with Columbus' plans. Columbus himself had asked for 10% of everything that was to come out of his discoveries, which also did not sit well with the King. Finally, word had come in to the King that the eastern route had in the meantime been discovered to be feasible. The King then was no longer interested in trying a western route.

Christopher Columbus did not operate under a specific law but rather sought royal patronage to fund his expedition. His main objective was to find a westward route to Asia to access its lucrative spice trade. He believed that by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean, he could reach Asia more quickly than the established routes around Africa. Columbus's plans were ultimately based on a mix of navigational theories and a desire for wealth and glory, rather than any formal legal framework.
Columbus gained Queen Isabella's support for his voyages primarily by presenting a compelling proposal that promised new trade routes and wealth through the discovery of Asia. He also leveraged Spain's desire to expand its influence and compete with other European powers, particularly Portugal. Additionally, his persistence and the backing of influential figures helped convince Isabella to invest in his ambitious plans, ultimately leading to his historic expeditions across the Atlantic.
Columbus wanted to sail west around the world to reach the Indies.

Columbus reached the Americas only to find that some of the natives inhabiting it practiced cannibalism. They were savage people who could not be reasoned with and there was no way Columbus could have explained his visions and plans to them so he had to order his men to finish off most of them.
