WW1 (1914-1918) was man's first experience at fighting in the sky; wooden framed airplanes covered with cloth (canvas), powered by primitive propellered engines, and no parachutes for the crashing pilot; if the plane didn't burn on the way down, he might be able to ride it out and crash land. If it burned on the way down, then he was finished. WW2 (For the US/1941-1945) was refined into metal airplanes, better machineguns & cannons, faster machines, and parachutes for the airmen. Korean War (1950-1953) was man's first experience at fighting with jets against jets; although old WW2 propeller driven airplanes were used (Corsairs, Mustangs, B-29 Superfortress, Bearcats, etc.) the real eye opener were the NEW JETS. Still armed with machineguns (.50 caliber) but travelling at nearly 600 mph. Faster, smoother, and deadlier. The US F-86 Sabre, F-84 Thunderstreak, and F-80 Shooting Star, and USN's Panthers were still primitive compared to what was to come, after the war. But the handwriting was on the wall: Speed. Missiles were soon to follow. Vietnam War (1961-1975) was refined jets built from lessons learned during the first jet war. The F-86 Sabre gave it's job over to the new F-100 Supersabre as a beginning; and may have shot down the first enemy MIG during the Vietnam War, using cannon fire. The only miscalculation that the US designers made was believing that future dog-fights (aerial combat) would be done with MISSILES ONLY. Consequently, some of the new jets were built WITHOUT "Guns." Such as the vaunted F-4 Phantom II. Heavy jet losses over North Vietnam forced a change; TOP GUN school in Southern California was created by the US Navy and US Airmen returned to the skys of North Vietnam with a vengence, this time armed with guns (cannons). Our last two ACE's of the 20th Century were made by US Airmen flying a jet that was originally designed with only missiles; the F-4 Phantom. Today's 21st Century Jets can fly by themselves, and are computer assisted. UAV's are past the drawing board.
1. First war fought by the USAF. 2. Worlds first "jet" war.
When Afghanistan jet fighters are fighting US jet fighters. When Afghanistan tanks are fighting US tanks. When Afghanistan warships are fighting US warships. When Afghanistan soldiers are fighting US soldiers. Then it will be like Vietnam. Right now, it just a law enforcement issue; finding terrorists, arresting them, or terminating them.
Korea was the first armed conflict in which both sides used jet aircraft.
It didn't effect the nation, except for the usual draftees that had to fight it. The main thing that affected the US was the military: the World (led by the US) was recovering from WWII, and transitioning from propeller driven aircraft to jets; from WWII tanks to modern tanks; from bolt action (US had semi-autos) WWII rifles for the common infantryman to semi-autos/burp guns for everybody; helicopters were being worked into the system. Bottom line: Korean War jets, tanks, guns, small arms, were being transitioned into weapons that would fight in Vietnam 10 years later. Some examples follow: 1. Korean War M46 Patton tank evolved into the Vietnam War M48 Patton tank. 2. Korean War F-86 Sabre jet evolved into the Vietnam War F-100 Super Sabre jet. 3. Korean War (was also a WWII plane) B-29 Superfortress bomber evolved into a Vietnam War B-52 Stratofortress bomber. 4. Korean War US Navy Phantom jet evolved into a Vietnam War F-4 Phantom II jet.
The most note worthy, is that Vietnam brought back an old idea; the gun. Thanks to the Vietnam War, all US jet fighters now have guns on them, no matter how modern they are...the F22 Raptor has guns...because the Vietnam War was the last war in which US jet fighter pilots fought a determined and competent enemy in jet to jet warfare. The US dog-fighting schools, TOP GUN (USN) and RED FLAG (USAF) were specifically designed based upon the experience gained in the skies over North Vietnam...good old fashioned dog-fighting (air to air combat).
WW1 (1914-1918) was mankind's FIRST aerial war; airplanes fought airplanes (dog-fights). Korean War (1950-1953) was man's FIRST "Jet" air war; jet airplanes fought jet airplanes (dog-fights). WW1 & Korean War were the only wars of the 20th century ended by an Armistice.

The Korean War parallels WW1. 1. WW1 was the FIRST airplane against airplane war (dog-fighting). 2. Korea was the FIRST jet against jet war (dog-fighting). 3. WW1 was a knock down slug-fest back and forth fight on the ground. 4. Korea was a knock down slug-fest back and forth fight on the ground. 5. WW1 was eclipsed by WW2 and is a forgotten war. 6. Korea was eclipsed by WW2 and is a forgotten war. 7. WW1 was ended by an Armistice in 1918. 8. Korea was ended by an Armistice in 1953.
Large scale jet-on-jet combat, helicopters, improved rifles and machine guns.
North Korea was believed to have received war materials from Russia and Russian pilot were believed to have flown North Korean jet fighters against US forces
That the Korean War was history's first clash of jet aircraft & that both WW1 and the Korean War were the only two (major) war's of the 20th century that were ended by an Armistice.
The cold wars not based on fighting. I highly doubt there were any jet fighter ace's in it.

Korea. The Nazi's did invent a jet warplane during WWII, but the Allies didn't and in any case the Nazi jet never progressed much past prototype as it was only designed during the later stages of the war.
