The original thirteen colonies each had grievances against their status in the British Empire, as did those in the territories outside their boundaries. But no single colony could have successfully thrown off the yoke of English rule : the British Army and Navy were too powerful. Men such as Jefferson, and Washington, and Benjamin Franklin were convinced that only through their combined efforts could the Americans become self-determining. This meant a strong confederation that could survive, grow, and adapt over time, keeping the United States strong enough to maintain its independence and its freedoms. To this end, the Articles of Confederation, and later the Constitution, recognized the nation as a united whole rather than a disparate group.
