On the contrary, the war was very popular amongst Americans as they were angered by British impressment of American sailors.

....so "popular", in fact, that the seven New England states openly discussed seceding from the union. President Madison was stampeded into attacking his neighbour by the politicians known as the War Hawks, who saw impressment as an excuse to forcibly annex Canada.

His invasion of Canada set off riots in which American citizens died. The Royal Navy's blockade of American ports caused severe economic hardship that made the war even more unpopular.

So did the result of the American attempt at invading its neighbour. The US Army was badly led and badly supplied, and although it greatly outnumbered the defenders of Canada, it was routed, and sent retreating back over the border in a series of battles, none of which made Americans any more fond of sending their sons off to an unnecessary war.

The war was so unpopular, in fact, that the state of Vermont continued to sell strategic war materials to the Royal Navy through most of the conflict.

Which battle was fought but wasn't supposed to be fought?

There are several battles that fit that description, for a number of different reasons, but in American History, the one that best fits is The Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. It was actually fought after the peace treaty had already been signed, but neither army had been informed of that fact.
