American troops were sent to My Lai during the Vietnam War as part of a search-and-destroy mission aimed at combating the Viet Cong insurgency. On March 16, 1968, in a tragic turn of events, soldiers from Charlie Company of the 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, killed between 347 and 504 unarmed South Vietnamese civilians, including women, children, and the elderly. This event, known as the My Lai Massacre, was later revealed to the public, leading to widespread outrage and condemnation of U.S. military tactics in Vietnam. The massacre highlighted issues of military ethics and the consequences of the war on civilian populations.
