Sleeping on the ground, wet, ants, rats, mosquitos, snakes, Spiders, leeches, mud, wet for weeks at a time, performing hygiene with leaves or creek water...day after day after day after day. The army did issue an inflatable mattress, just narrow enough for a man to sleep on it...but they were few and far between...punctured easily...didn't normally last but a day or a week. Men's bottom front teeth began falling out, due to a lack of proper brushing (tooth brushes were issued in SP packages...but not enough, and not often). C rations had a "toothpick" to brush with...was better than nothing.

War is (was) living like an animal; at least the Vietnam War/Korea/WWII/WWI/Civil War/etc. were.

Then people back home wondered why some of the returning men ate like hungry wolves at the dinner table! When you've been eating COLD "C" rations (canned food & but they were actually pretty good...but it'd be nice if they could've been heated up more often) for nearly 365 days...a home COOKED meal with CLEAR water to drink was like being in the most expensive restaurant in the world.

The above was STRESS. Getting into a battle (shoot-out/firefight) actually allowed some of the men to vent a little bit (get it out of their system).
