In 1765, the UK Parliament signed a piece of legislation known as the "Stamp Act" intended to help pay for the defence of the British colonies in the US and the West Indies and to make them more directly responsible for the continuously increasing cost of supporting them.

The colonists however argued that as they did not have a direct representative in the UK house of Parliament, that this tax was a denial of their rights as Englishmen as laid down in the English Bill of Rights and as such unconstitutional.

This grievance was summarised in the slogan "No taxation without representation".
