People began questioning the standard interpretations of Christianity as soon as they existed. I think the questioning is part of the human psyche. Heterodox and heretical versions of Christianity were always around. In the Late Middle Ages, they began to be taken more seriously for reasons that were largely economic and political. The fact that Henry VIII could not get a divorce he wanted was part of it. The fact that there were problems in the Church were another. And the fact that the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire wanted to have more control over bishops added to the problems. But these were not reasons people questioned the institutions, so much as they were the political reasons why powerful leading figures were willing to go along with the questioning.
