My Grandfather served with this unit durind WWII, the unit was formed and trained at Camp Claiborne, LA in June of 1942. They were sent to Iran aboard the USS Westpoint in November of 1942. Upon arrival, they began service under the Persian Gulf Command. My understanding is that they built a supply route from Iran to Russia. This supply route apparently was key to resuppling the Russian Army, especially during the battle for Stalingrad. After a couple of years in a hot desert many men from this Regiment entered Europe and fought in the Battle of the Buldge.
