US Air Force fighter bombers, and Strategic Air Command (SAC) B-52 Stratofortress high altitude heavy bombers were stationed in Thailand during the war. If any USAF Airmen received the VSR they most likely were crewmen aboard those aircraft. Or possibly some support aircraft such as fuellers or rescue teams (HH-53 type "Jolly Green Giants).

The USAF stationed in Thailand fought the AIR WAR over "NORTH Vietnam"; while the USA & USMC fought the GROUND WAR in "SOUTH Vietnam." As well as the USN, which, along with conducting fire support & counter shore battery fire against enemy positions in both SOUTH & NORTH Vietnam, engaged North Viet Air Force MIG 17, MIG 19, and MIG 21's over the skies of North Vietnam.

If the man has the VSR, and the VSR is considered a foreign war CAMPAIGN ribbon, then he qualifies for the VFW.

Note-VFW is the nation's oldest vet group, founded in 1899 by veterans of the Spanish-American War of 1898. This was the US's FIRST foreign war. The vet group AMERICAN LEGION was founded in 1919 by WW1 vets; AMVETs( American Veterans) was founded in 1944 by WW2 vets. The oldest vet group, GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) consisted of US Civil War UNION veterans, but died out when the last vet passed on. VVA (Vietnam Veterans of America) was created in 1978/79, partially because other US veteran groups had alienated returning Viet War veterans.
