Feudalism is a medieval governmental and social system with a weak central government and a hierarchy of control with the king at the top and a number of levels of nobility below him, with each below the king reporting to him or some intermediary. This system made it possible to react to invasion, rebellion, or other disturbance quickly, without the need for rapid response by the central government. It came about because the central governments were weak and unable to fulfill this need.

Feudalism developed around the 9th century. It was the social system built around the concept of the warrior class being awarded lands and its income by the king, often as a result of shown loyalty and bravery in the service of the king, in return for a number of lifelong legal and moral obligations towards the king by the recipient and his heirs.

1) The contract was called a Fealty.

2) The land in question was a Fiefdom

3) In exchange for the Fiefdom the leader of the incomers had to pay homage to the King. As such he was a Vassal to the King. As a Vassalhe would also be expected supply specific services to the King . This service was called a Fee

The Fee varied according to the skills of the in comers .

The leader of the incomers would also be given title commensurate to the Fee

The order was as follows, from top to bottom:

Duke. The highest rank below the King and his family. The name is derived from the latin word "dux", meaning military commander. They usually got to rule whole provinces of the Realm

Marquis -The borders between Countries were know as Marches. This Vassal had the job of defending them.

Count. A Count would rule an area that often had a large town within it.

The larger area was known as a County. The Count would be a good administrator and he would also be expected to offer council and legal advice to the King.

Viscount. A noble rank between count and baron. Originally it was the title given to high-ranking sheriffs and not hereditary.

Baron. Originally not a noble title; it came with the posession of a manor that carried the right for its owner to call himself Baron, and as such could be bought and sold.

The process in general was further applied within each Fiefdom. So the bottom of society had to pay his superior who in turn paid his etc.etc.

This came to be when everyone decided that there was going to be a high group and a low group. Then people started to just continue their lives as one rich and one poor and the poor were treated like nobody's.

Your answer may reflect the net affect of Feudalism -but that was not the motive for its introduction.

Consider the Franks - a collection of tribes who arrived in then Gaul (now France) after the Romans left.

The Franks settled in France and established the then French Monarchy. This was not achieved overnight

Having established a system of government -they are then faced with the problem of what to do if other tribes wish to move in and maybe attempt a take over

Answer -Feudalism

This system sought to do a deal with new in- coming tribes . The Vikings from the North were classic case. Particularly as these guys knew how to fight.

The incoming tribes would always seek land.

The feudal deal was roughly as follows:

1) The contract was called a Fealty.

2) The land in question was a Fiefdom

3) In exchange for the Fiefdom the leader of the incomers had to

Pay homage to the King of France i.e plenty of bowing and scraping . As such he was a Vassal to the King. As a Vassal he would also be expected supply a specific service to the King . This service was called a Fee

The Fee varied according to the skills of the in comers .

The leader of the incomers would also be given title commensurate to the Fee.

The Pecking order was as follows

From Top to bottom

Duke . This Vassal was the leader of the best fighters. This service would be required if new incomers proved difficult and preferred to fight- and not do a deal.

Marquis -The borders between Countries were known as Marches hence Marquis This Vassal had the job of defending them.

Count. A Count would take over and develop an area that already had a large town within it. These towns originally were developed by the Romans.

This larger area was known as a County. The Countwould be a good administer plus he would also be expected to offer council and legal advise to the King.

Viscount. The system total was strictly primogeniture i.e by inheritance No.1 son inherited the lot.

This title was then reserved for No.1 sons as they developed and earned recognition

Barron

This Vassal would take over an area that had people living in it -but not in any systematic way. The Barron's area, when developed , was known as the Manor

This process in general was further applied within each zone.So the bottom of the pile had to pay his superior who in turn paid his etc.etc.

Trust that this clarifies the topic of Feudalism.

The fall of the Western Roman Empire did not lead to feudalism. This was a later development that resulted from a society that was totally different from that of the Romans.

Feudalism developed in the 9th century, 300-400 years after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. It was the result over continued wars of succession in the Carolingian Empire (the empire set up by Charlemagne) between the sons of a deceased emperor in which other close relatives also got involved. This led to a weak central power, war among the princes, and vassalage. Higher aristocrats enlisted the military support of lower aristocrats in exchange for land. This land was called feud and the vassal became the lord of the manor who controlled the land of the feud.. Another feature was encastlement. Due to the instability of continuous warfare, the vassals retreated to castles in their rural feuds. The word feudalism refers to the feuds and the lord-vassal relationship. This development was not connected to the Roman past.

One thing that the Roman days contributed to indirectly was serfdom. In the late empire, the urban economy was in crisis. Many people moved to the countryside. The owners of the large landed estates made use of these people as servile labor and institutionalized this. This provided a platform for the development of medieval serfdom.

Feudalism did not emerge straight after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. It was the result of political instability in the Carolingian Empire. This was the empire established by Charlemagne which lasted from 800 to 888. Following Germanic tradition, the empire was divided between the sons of the emperor. This meant that each succession resulted in war between the sons over their stakes in the empire. Close relatives also got involved. Continuous warfare was very disruptive and led to the collapse of central authority and the reliance of higher aristocrats (lords) who led the warring factions on petty aristocrats as vassals. Vassals fought with the lord's forces. In exchange they received feuds, areas of land over which they had proprietorship and jurisdiction. The instability of war also led to encastlement, the entrenchment of vassals in castles in the rural areas for better defence and control over the feuds.

The word feudalism refers to the relationship between higher and lower members of the warrior aristocracy, lords and vassals, and the feuds.
