Why was the Middle Ages known as barbaric?

"Barbaric" is a term that has been romanticised to infer the primitive and brutal nature of life and warfare during the Middle Ages (ca. 5th to 15th centuries) The term can also relate the the loosely coined "Barbarians", which was given to tribes and people outside the Roman Empire prior to the onset of the Middle Ages. As the rapid expansion of the Roman Empire and the influx of foreigners (i.e. barbarians) into the Roman lands were responsible for the demise of the the Empire, it could be another reason why the Middle Ages are labelled as 'barbaric'. It is however, not appropriate to label the entire Middle Ages period as barbaric as there very many discoveries and occurrences during this time that were very civilised and eminent and far from the stereotypical and contemporary definition of barbaric.

Who is most responsible for Hellenization?

First is Alexander the Great. When he made his rapid conquest of Egypt and Persia about 325 BC, creating the largest Western empire to ever have existed, he brought Greek culture with him to all of these lands. He also founded cities based on Greek cities (such as Alexandria, Egypt), in order to further spread Greek (Hellenistic) culture. Afterwards, when the Roman Empire conquered Greece in 144 BC, they brought Hellenistic culture back to Rome and spread it throughout the empire, effectively Hellenizing nearly all of the civilized Western world.

How did geography influence the Fall of Rome?

As an empire surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, Rome was vulnerable to attack or infiltration by land, notably along its long European frontier. The Empire's great east-west extent also limited rapid movement of forces between its provinces.

What made the rapid expansion of Rome empire possible?

It is widely viewed that the Romans were able to expand their empire because of their ability to build long distance roads, thus allowing for rapid transport of men and material to areas of conflict and to speed communication and furnish supplies to occupied lands. Indeed, railways even today are spaced to the width of Roman chariot wheels - 4' 8 1/2", the same as wagons. Roman chariots were designed to be able to support the width of 2 horses, so you could say it was a horse's a$$ that enabled the Romans to get around quickly. Similarly, the British Empire was compared to the Romans because of their vast naval fleet and merchant ships, allowing them to have command of the seas - until they screwed up and let the colonies get away from them anyway.
