He wasn't alive for part of it. The Renaissance began in 1300 to 1600, so Columbus was in the middle of it in 1492. He was born in 1451 and died in 1506. He was from a aristocratic Spainsh family ( not from Italy) that were political rivals of the Spanish crown. To get funding for his voyages he took the persona of an Italian sailor. He attended Prince Henry's school of navigation, completed 4 voyages, and tried to establish a settlement on Hispaniola. He died sick and broke. The Spanish crown broke their contract with him and his sons sued the crown as a result.
