The term fall of Rome refers to the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire (the part in Western Europe and northwest Africa), which fell under the weight of the Germanic invasions. The eastern part of the Roman Empire (the part in south-eastern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean) was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist for nearly, 1000 years. The disintegration of the western part of the empire was started by the invasion of Gaul by the Vandals, Sueves and Alans in 406. The Alemanni and Burgundians and also crossed the frontier and took over Roman lands.
The four Germanic peoples and one Iranian-speaking people which invaded the western part of the Roman Empire and the two Germanic peoples who had been allowed to settle in the Roman Empire formed their own kingdoms in the former lands of the western part of the Roman Empire. Out of these peoples, the Franks became the dominant power in Western Europe.
The Burgundians took over Burgundy and part of the Rhone valley (in eastern France) and established the Kingdom of the Burgundians. The Alemanni from southern Germany took advantage of the invasion of Gaul to expand their territory into nearby Lorraine (in north-western France) and part of Switzerland. The Vandals, Alans and Sueves reached Spain in 409. The Sueves formed a kingdom in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. The Vandals and the Alans moved from Spain to northwest Africa in 429 because the Visigoths were expanding into Spain. They formed the kingdom of the Vandals there. The Visigoths, who had been allowed to settle in the eastern part of the empire by the Romans, moved to south-western Gaul and established their own kingdom there, which they then expanded into Hispania (Spain and Portugal). By the late 400s they had taken over most of Hispania, except for the kingdom of the Sueves and small areas of the Basques and Cantabrians in the northwest. The Franks, who had been allowed to settle in Holland south of the river Rhine and Belgium by the Romans, expanded into northern France. In 486 took over the Domain of Soissons, a rump Roman state in central France. The Kingdom of the Franks continued to expand. In 496-506 it took over their territories of the Alemanni, including their homeland in southern Germany. In 507 it expelled the Visigoths from south-western Gaul. It defeated the Burgundians in 532 and annexed their kingdom in 534.
In 487 Zeno, the emperor of the eastern part of the Roman Empire, sent Theodoric the Great, the king of the Ostrogoths, to take over Italy on his behalf to depose a usurper there. The Ostrogoths had been allowed to settle in the eastern part of the empire. Theodoric was meant to be like a viceroy of Zeno. Instead, he established the Kingdom of the Ostrogoths in Italy, eastern Austria, western Hungary, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and northern Serbia.
Another eastern Roman Emperor, Justinian the Great, wanted to recover the lands lost by the western part of the Roman Empire. He started the Vandalic War (533-534) in which the Vandals were defeated and expelled from northwest Africa. In Italy he started the Gothic War (535-554). He managed to defeat the Visigoths, but these nineteen years of intense fighting left part of northern Italy devastated and depopulated. Moreover, eighteen years later, in 568, the Lombards conquered northern Italy and established two duchies in central Italy.
The Frankish kingdom it expanded further. Charlemagne defeated the Lombards in Italy and crowned himself king of Italy. He controlled only northern and central Italy. In 774 he conquered Bavaria and in 778 he conquered the southern side of the Pyrenee Mountains in Spain. Between 777 and 797 he conquered northern Germany. Pope Leo III crowned him "Emperor of the Romans." This was the beginning of what historian call the Carolingian Empire (800-888) which covered most of mainland Europe.
