Several Germanic tribes invaded the western part of the Roman Empire to migrate in search of new lands to settle. The Romans were not able to repel these invasions. This started the process of the fall of this part of the empire. The eastern part of the Roman Empire was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist for nearly 1,000 years.

They invaded Raetia, Gaul, Hispania, Africa and Britannia, that is, all of the west except, at first, for Italy. This led to internal strife and the collapse of dynastic rule, to which Germanic meddling with Roman politics also contributed. However, they did not intend to end the empire. They just wanted to leave on its lands. The Germanic leaders, who invaded Italy, Odoacer and Theodoric the Great, wanted to revive the empire.

What is the fall of rome like?

The term fall of Rome refers to the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire (the eastern part continued to exist for nearly 1,000 years). The fall of the western part of the Roman Empire was a process. Many factors contributed to this. The main one was the invasions by Germanic peoples (Vandals, Alans, Sueves and Burgundians). This part of the empire crumbled under the weight of these invasions. It lost political cohesion. There was a lot of infighting and a string of usurpations. The Romans were unable to respond to the invasions. Within some eighty years all the lands of this part of the empire were lost. Many historians think that prior to the fall of this part of the empire there was a decline of the Roman Empire as a whole.

What are some external reasons for the fall of rome?

The first problem was the general decline in literacy and stability that began with the Crisis of the Third Century, in about 235 AD, a period of continual civil wars lasting a couple generations. The second problem was that Roman citizens were more an more inclined to allow themselves to be defended by foreigners. The loyalty of the foreign troupes was badly eroded by the fact that they were badly treated. Eventually, even the highest generals were not Roman. Another problem was that the Germanic peoples on the border of the Roman Empire started to migrate into the empire because they were being attacked from farther out. They formed armies which raided until they finally settled down to form kingdoms of their own. The Roman Empire was formally divided in 286, and this division became permanent in 395. The division left each part rather uninterested in the well being of the other. And the East Roman Empire could not help the West, even if it had the will to do so, because of ongoing wars with the Persians. The 5th century saw a series of weak emperors of the West Roman Empire, most of whom were merely puppets of their Germanic generals. There are people who blame Christianity for making people weak. I think the West Roman Empire had reasons enough without that. The East Roman Empire lasted another thousand years, until 1453, when it was destroyed, after many changes in fortune, by the Ottoman Turks, but that is not referred to as the fall of the Roman Empire. There is a link below to an article on the Decline of the Roman Empire.

What caused Egypts decline and eventual fall?

What factors lead to the decline and fall of the Rome empire?

Three? A recent German study has come up with 210 reasons for the decline and fall of the Roman empire. (Don't worry, I won't list them all) Three of the main reasons were a population shift which caused pressure on the borders. The population shift came about because Germanic tribes were being pushed into Roman territory by Asian tribes. The Roman army at the fall, was weak and apathetic as there was no incentive for a strong army, such as loot and Roman citizenship for the auxiliaries. There was, in addition, a monetary factor, as more money left the empire than was taken in, due to excessive consumerism.

Did all of the roman empire fall at once?

Most historians tend to agree with Gibbon's account in his "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" that it began as a result of internal decline of socio-political and military dissension around 230-250 and was complete when the Germanic tribes crossed the Rhine in 406 of the Common Era. There is debate on the actual "fall" as the Eastern Empire, Byzantium, lasted until the invasion by the Ottoman Empire in 1453.

A barbaric tribe that helped bring about the collapse of rome?

Several Germanic tribes and the Alans (who were Iranian speakers) contributed to the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire (which is what the term fall of Rome refers to). In continental Europe they were: the Vandals, Sueves, Alemanni, Burgundians and Visigoths. On Britain they were the Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians.
