At the height of the Roman Empire the city of Rome became the biggest city that ever existed in antiquity. It is estimated that it had 1-1.4 million of inhabitants, a mind boggling figure for that time when population levels were much lower. It was not until the 19th century that a European city (London) reached the one million mark. Rome was developed into a monumental city, full of temples, large and beautiful public buildings, triumphal arches and statues. The most famous structures were the Circus Maximus (the Chariot Racing track) and the Colosseum.

The Roman Empire was the second largest empire in antiquity and the 17th largest in history. It covered Western Europe up to the River Rhine and southern Germany, Britain, the Balkan Peninsula (in south-eastern Europe); Turkey and the Levant (the area on or near the Mediterranean Sea in Asia); and Egypt and the coastal area of the rest of North Africa.

Imperial expansion started when Rome was a republic. The Roman Republic then fell and rule by emperors replaced it. From then on emperors ruled the empire. The Romans kept legions (armies) in the border provinces of the empire. They fostered trade and production for trade and developed thriving trading networks throughout the empire and beyond. They had trading links with the Arabs, Persians, Indians and Chinese and along the amber road to Poland. They tolerated the religions and customs of the conquered peoples, allowed them to use their customary laws at the local level and allowed the local elites to run local affairs.

What is the fall of rome like?

The term fall of Rome refers to the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire (the eastern part continued to exist for nearly 1,000 years). The fall of the western part of the Roman Empire was a process. Many factors contributed to this. The main one was the invasions by Germanic peoples (Vandals, Alans, Sueves and Burgundians). This part of the empire crumbled under the weight of these invasions. It lost political cohesion. There was a lot of infighting and a string of usurpations. The Romans were unable to respond to the invasions. Within some eighty years all the lands of this part of the empire were lost. Many historians think that prior to the fall of this part of the empire there was a decline of the Roman Empire as a whole.

When did the roman empire reach its peak?

By 117 AD, the Roman Empire has reached its peak. That is true, the roman empire peaked at that time. But later, the eastern roman empire, or byzantine empire, controlled most of the old roman empire plus some territory to the east, but I think that the best response to that question is 117 AD
