The Christmas Tree has a long history pre-dating the birth of Christ. In ancient times evergreen trees were used to decorate homes for the celebration of the winter solstice. Martin Luther is said to have introduced the custom to Protestant Germany in the 16Th century from where it spread gradually across Europe. I believe it was a protestant alternative to the nativity scene which was associated with Catholic idolatry. The custom did not reach England until the 1840's when it was introduced by Prince Albert the German born husband and consort of Queen Victoria.
