What does La Befana do?

The night of January 5th, the Christian feast of the Epiphany, is when La Befana appears in Italy. It will be nice to receive her gifts in the morning but it will not be nice -- the result will be a whack of her broomstick -- to try to see her during her gift-giving since she has a lot of things to do and places to go.

La Befana is in celebration of the Epiphany where the Three Wise Men bring gifts to Jesus. It's a white witch. Then you eat a cake that is special only for that day. You usually eat fish, too. There are candies that are made like lumps of coal for the bad kids, or if you just want to joke around.

She is a Christmas witch who delivers presents to (and lumps of coal for the naughty) children throughout Italy like Santa delivers to children in America.
