∙ 9y agoHalloween, which derives from an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain, was celebrated as a harvest festival in Gaelic culture. The earliest documented reference to "trick or treating" in English speaking America was in 1911. A Kingston, Ontario paper reported it was normal for small children to go street begging on Halloween at designated times. Many attribute the emergence of the celebration in this country of Irish immigrants who brought the holiday and customs along with them .

∙ 14y agoHalloween started actually in four countries. The Celts most came up with the idea of Samhain. The Welsh, Irish, and British created most of the legends that made up Halloween and made it the fun festival it is today instead of the ceremony it was.
