To make a long story short one can say it all began when the Roman Catholic church sought pagan converts early in the history of Christianity. Christmas was meant to replace the pagan winter solstice celebration. Easter also has pagan roots and was created by the church to coincide with the Jewish holiday of Passover. There is a rich history of Christmas celebration, but the custom became popular in Europe and the US when Queen Victoria had a live evergreen tree brought inside and exquisitely decorated. Once this popular craze was underway, the Hallmark greeting card company stepped in and helped to popularize many other holidays, like Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day.
