Why are shoes called tennis shoes if they are not for tennis?

Most of the time it just depends. A lot of people call regular sneakers 'tennis shoes', even when they aren't tennis shoes. Tennis shoes could generally be noticed by the tracks or markings on the bottom of the shoe. Most tennis shoes have non-marking soles with a round track under the big toe bone. Tennis shoes are actually used for tennis! I know this because I myself am a very serious tennis player.

Tennis shoes are different from regular shoes, even though many people overlook that. Tennis shoes have much more traction on their soles, as tennis players need to change directions and sprint very often. Running shoes, or regular shoes, have traction that generally helps the person go forward. Tennis shoes, on the other hand, are designed so that the player can easily change directions on the court. This is also why tennis shoes are more expensive than running shoes (most of the time).

The first shoes made of rubber and canvas were tennis shoes. They were white, low-top shoes made in the same style as regular men's shoes were and, at first, were worn only to play tennis. Later, rubber and canvas shoes were made with black canvas and higher ankles, and were called sneakers. Sneakers were worn to play Basketball and replaced leather shoes worn by many boys during and after the depression.
