E-waste (Electronic Waste) is one of the fastest growing wastes filling up our landfills. Various components in these electronics are toxic and poison our land, air and water.

In 2008, there were 4.6 Billion Pounds of E-waste in the United States. However, less than 900 million Pounds (19%) of that waste was recycled. Most of it ended up in landfills either in the United States or was shipped to other countries such as China, India, Malaysia, and Pakistan.

Many countries are beginning to outlaw the import of E-Waste which is creating a need for much more domestic recycling. In the United States, as a result of new state and federal regulations along with additional public awareness, the need for plants capable of processing electronic waste has increased tremendously. Currently, the supply of electronic waste greatly exceeds the total processing power of recyclers within the United States and this divide is growing ever faster as regulations further restrict the export of these materials and as new techniques and technologies make the process more sustainable.

A fast growing company that is working to make a difference in the United States is All Green Electronics Recycling. They offer free service and have over 100 drop-off locations and do free pick-ups all across the country. Check out www.allgreenrecycling.com or call (800)780-0347

Hi

when you talk about why we should recycle computers, its mainly because, there may be some parts that work and some that are broke, e.g. you may want t throw out a computer because it is slow, when you recycle it, technicians smiply test it, discover it is slow, then replace the processor, RAM, or ROM, with a new one, by recycling a computer, a new one can be built from its parts, with some new extra parts.

To explain this more better, I have simplified my answer.

A recycled computer, turns to scrap, some scrap can be reused, some just has to be destroyed, the reused scrap, makes a bran new computer, simple.

BUT REMEMBER, IF YOU WANT TO RECYCLE A COMPUTER, TAKE THE HARD DRIVE OUT, AND DESTROY IT (with hammer) THEY PAY PEOPLE IN CHINA AND OTHER COUNTRIES TO FIND IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON HARD DRIVES SUCH AS WORK OR BANK DETAILS, YOU THOUGHT YOU DELEATED EVERYTHING, BUT IT IS STILL THERE!! STILL BURNED ON THE PLATTER (a platter is like a CD but in a hard drive), PEOPLE THAT KNOW A LOT ABOUT COMPUTERS, WOULD MAINLY DESTROY THEIR HARD DRIVE OR KEEP IT SAFE AND HIDDEN IN THEIR HOUSE.

Many components are expensive and dangerous to our enviroment, If computer parts are returned to the manufacturer they will re-use chemicals within and therefor could reduce the price of future parts.
