∙ 15y agoFibre optics has a very low signal loss compared to a coax cable. It has no external interference. Its light, flexible and much easier to run thaan a coax cable. It is also immune to outside eavesdropping from other machines not involved in the sending process

∙ 15y agoAs far as I know, these are not compatible or comparable systems of transmission. Optical fiber is used to transmit digitally encoded light pulses (data). Waveguide is used to transmit radio frequency (RF) energy. There aren't advantages of one over the other because they cannot be used for the same thing.

With Verizon FIOS for example, the Fiber to the house is converted to twisted pair for a CAT-5 connection and coax for TV applications. Fiber can carry a lot of data but the termination process and modulation and demodulation may be more expensive. Twisted pair is cheap, but has distance limitations. Coax can also carry a lot of information, but is more subject to radio frequency interference.

∙ 12y agoIt is definitely faster. Transmission of data through the cable is at the speed of light. No voltage drop due to wire resistance. Also, it's more secure since it can't be tapped into.
