Born: 13 October 1925 (1925-10-13) (age 82) Grantham, Lincolnshire, England.
Served as Conservative Prime Minister from 1979 to '90 and was one of the most controversial British Premiers of the postwar era- was in power during the Falklands War of 1982- sought to abolish the Welfare State and replace it with privatisation- threw open the British Stock Market to foreign investment- did much damage to the British National Health system- refused to supply significant aid to Ethiopia during the 1984/85 famine- was responsible for the death of Britain's coal industry by announcing a massive pit closure programme, which led to a bitter and lengthy miner's strike- did do much to make higher education more accessible to ordinary people by dismantling the 'ivory tower' of the Universities, preventing them from being so exclusive, introducing University status to technical colleges and beginning the process of reform that now enables anybody to get a higher education degree if they want to- banned media interviews with IRA representatives and prevented members of Sinn Fein from travelling to the UK mainland ('denying them the oxygen of publicity'- quote)- permitted the USA to base cruise missiles in the UK and cosied up to Ronald Reagan during the Cold War, but was quick to recognise Mikhail Gorbachev's genuine desire to reform the USSR and encouraged the Americans to accept his offers of arms reduction- banned semi-automatic weapons in the UK following the Hungerford Massacre of 1987- introduced the infamous 'Poll Tax' in 1990 which proved to be her downfall, provoking outrage amongst politicians and the public alike and resulting in a huge riot in Trafalgar Square, and resulted in a Vote of No Confidence in her from the Conservative Party resulting in her resignation in November 1990- prior to this, she had supported the Coalition against Saddam Hussein following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and committed a large number of troops there.
Was admitted to the House of Lords in 1992 as Lady Thatcher of Kesteven- died 8th April 2013 at the age of 88.
