The Nationalists (now Republic of China in Taiwan) and the Communists were literally forced to be allies; Mao Zedong advocated all out gorilla warfare against the Japanese, he was however deep in his stronghold with most of his reserved troops and planned to have the Nationalists do all the fighting. After the war civil war resumed, Mao didn't really win the "peasant's mandate"; simply the Nationalists were greatly diminished because of the war (because they did all the fighting) and could no longer fight. Mao took advantage of that and took China for himself.
