Most Filipinos are Catholic and follow the Catholic Church's teachings against contraception, even though it goes against their best interest. There is a major lack of education about the value of Birth Control among the Filipino population, especially the most impoverished sections. Contraception is not readily available in the Philippines and most people can't afford it, don't consider it necessary, or both. Many people who are sexually active do not use condoms as they don't realize the many negative results that can come from unprotected sex (not just unplanned/ unwanted pregnancy). The Philippines are also very much a male-dominated society still, and even if they are taught about condoms, Filipinas are often reluctant to insist that their partners use a condom due to cultural constraints against saying "no" to a man. Filipinos in poverty often have the most babies, as they see children as their form of "insurance," who can take care of them when they are older. Unfortunately this is a short-sighted solution as these same families often can't care properly for the many children they bring into the world.
