A "Mandated Territory", often referred to as "a mandate". The country which was administering this territory had "a mandate" to do so in the best interests of its people, and the administering country was forbidden to fortify this territory for its own military purposes. This last part was enthusiastically ignored by the Japanese administering the island groups they obtained as mandates from the German Empire as part of the peace following WWI, greed for which islands had been the main Japanese motivation for eventually entering WWI ostensibly on the allied side. Many Americans would die in the next war capturing those islands which the Japanese had been fortifying for twenty years. Another mandated area was in the Middle East, where France had a mandate in Lebanon and Syria, and Britain in Palestine, which is today divided into Jordan and Israel. Much of the turmoil in those nations for the last ninety years dates from this time.
