The treaty, formally called The Treaty Between the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics on the Elimination of Their Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles was signed by President Ronald Reagan and General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev on December 8, 1987, ratified by the US Senate on May 27, 1988 and became effective June 1, 1988.
