In 1945, representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the United Nations Conference on International Organization to draw up the United Nations Charter. Those delegates deliberated on the basis of proposals worked out by the representatives of China, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States at Dumbarton Oaks, United States, in August-October 1944. The Charter was signed on 26 June 1945 by the representatives of the 50 countries. As of October 2023, there is no 51st member of the United Nations. The UN currently has 193 member states. The organization has expanded since its founding in 1945, but the last country to join was South Sudan in 2011, making it the 193rd member.

There is currently no 51st state of the United States. There are talks again about Puerto Rico achieving statehood and we might see this happening soon, depending on who is elected president in the upcoming election.
