Yeah, they do bite. I grabbed one today accidentally while pulling a leek from the garden. It felt like a wasp stung me. I let go and saw a huge walking stick and noted later that it lost a leg when I grabbed it. It bit or stung or pinched, whatever it did, boy was I sore for awhile. I live in Missouri.

No. They do not bite, but they are able to sting/stab you with their rather strong proboscis and the sting is actually somewhat painful. Comparable with bee sting. Fortunately their sting is not poisonous or dangerous.
