I would really like to know the answer to that because I know the sound I ear here is not made by cicadas (I live in Quebec, Canada). Cicada's buzzing noises are more like "cri cri cri" (with some pauses) but the sound I'm talking about does not have any pause in it. It's more like a "criiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii...", and it can goes for 30 seconds even some minutes long without stopping. I always though it was a squirrel sound but I can't seem to find anything that sound like it on YouTube or anywhere else.
I don't know if it can help but the only time I heard that sound somewhere else than in the woods or my neighborhood was in the game Hot Shot Golf 3 (or was it Hot Shot Gold Fore).
Answer: None. The buzzing sound you hear from the trees in summer in New England is the "Dog day harvest fly", a type of cicada. There are dozens of varieties of cicada with varying sounds.
