College isn't necessarily a prerequisite to a job writing magazine copy, all you really need to do is write in such a way that people want to read it. To communicate well requires skill. Most people learn that skill in a formal environment such as college. If you can demonstrate your ability without attending college, go for it. On the other hand, most people don't consider you to be serious unless you have a 4 year Bachelors of Science degree.
By learning how to write -- and you do that by reading a lot and writing a lot. Practice and study make a good writer. Study the writers you enjoy reading to see how they do it, then practice doing it yourself.
Don't think it would take long, just try out for singing, and if your good, and are accepted, you'll probably have to practice singing, until they accept you to become a singer and become famous. (The singer does not make the songs, the writer does *wink*)

There is no special to become a writer, in fact the only way to become a writer is to spend time writing. Like the old mantra says practice practice practice. This is the only way to become a writer.
You must read always
Basicly... your entire life.
It depends on how great you want to be because it takes long years to gain thinking skills to be a science writer=•=
1. English. 2. Everything else. --A writer. If you want to become a writer, you are logically dealing with words. Therefore, it is best to study your native language -- become an English major let's say. A curriculum which teaches you the mechanics of your language, guides you through the reading of classic works of literature, and workshops writing of your own is ideal. But remember, a writer need not necessarily go to school to become a writer. Writing itself is a skill which is honed by doing. Write whenever you have time. And read, and read, and read. Stephen King in ON WRITING says to read over 70-80 books a year (which includes listening to books on CD and audio tape). This is pretty good advice.
