Locksmith pay rates vary from state to state, city to city and even from town to town. If you are a locksmith in New York City, Boston, Chicago or Los Angeles you can expect to make between $50-$85 per hour between the hours of 7am and 5pm. If a locksmith answers an emergency call after 5pm or on a weekend or holiday he can charge up to double whatever the regular day rate is.

In the Southern states, even in major metropolotan areas like Atlanta, GA a locksmith is likely to be paid less but he will still likely charge $$40-$60 per hour.

In more suburban and rural areas where the population isn't as dense the cost per hour a locksmith charges will be about half what a locksmith in New York City will charge.

Any way you look at it, a licensed locksmith can earn a very comfortable living.

Don't forget to take into account the cost of Insurance, Advertising, Gas, maintenance, Toolage, Equipment like key machines, cloning tools, key-blanks and software. Then there are all the specialty tools like a scope for safe work. It could cost you upwards of $50,000.00 to $70,000.00 just to set up a mobile service to do Commercial ,Automotive, and Residential service for the first year. Most guys start out small and gradually expand as their experience and working capital grow. It is a good trade, Plumbing and Electrical are also very rewarding trades always in high demand as well.
