Return of land grant common lands of Indo-Hispano people of New Mexico that were lost to the United States government and various individuals by means of theft, fraud, legal maneuverings and governmental appropriation. These losses occurred from 1848 to about 1900. Tijerina began his Alianza Federal de Mercedes (Federal Alliance of Land Grants) on February 2, 1963. It was active until 1970 when he was jailed on a trumped-up charge that he had induced his wife to burn a Forest Service sign. He served two years and the Alianza was finished as a viable political movement. However, he brought the issue of the loss of land grants back to public awareness. At this point in time (2012) 23 land grants are recognized by the State of New Mexico as political subdivisions and are eligible to receive grants from the federal and state governments. Tijerina sparked a movement that continues to this day.

Reies López Tijerina studied the old Spanish land grants to advocate for the land rights of the Mexican-American community in the American Southwest. He sought to restore these grants, which he believed were key to understanding historical land ownership and injustices faced by his community. Tijerina's research aimed to highlight the legal basis for reclaiming land lost to Anglo-American settlers and the government, fostering a sense of identity and empowerment among Mexican-Americans.
